Churchwell Lifts El Toro Into Tournament Final

Stephanie Churchwell was the sparkplug for El Toro on Friday, pitching a three-hit shutout with six strikeouts, driving in one run and scoring another to help the Chargers to a 7-0 victory over Long Beach Millikan in the semifinals of the Long Beach Millikan softball tournament.

The Chargers (2-0) will play Fountain Valley at 2 p.m. today in the championship game at Long Beach College.

In the Brea Olinda tournament:

Brea Olinda 4, South Pasadena 2--Tawni Baker, Christina Knobbe and Jill Green each had two hits for Brea (2-2) in the consolation game. Baker also got the victory, allowing five hits in a complete game.

In the Fullerton tournament:

Edison 2, Villa Park 1--Christy Feldt singled home Jen Marquez in the bottom of the seventh inning in the consolation game. Edison is 2-1.

In nonleague softball:

No. 7 Mater Dei 3, West Hills Chaminade 0 (10)--Junior Marissa Becerra pitched 10 scoreless innings for her second shutout of the week. Mater Dei scored three runs in the top of the 10th inning, on Sharee Zalesaki’s RBI single and Lorren Ortega’s two-run single.

Santa Margarita 4, Orange Lutheran 0--Katie Reiff and Katherine White combined on a two-hitter for Santa Margarita (2-0).

Garland Cooper, Rachel Bartholomew and Alycia Fitzpatrick had two hits each for the Eagles.

Westminster 16, Bolsa Grande 1--The Lions hit six home runs in their season opener, led by senior first baseman Erica Gonzalez, who had two homers, a double and three RBIs. Katrina Fischer, Nicole Moojan, Kellie Wright and Crissy Marlett also homered.

In nonleague boys’ tennis:

Mater Dei 15, Costa Mesa 3--Freshman Kaes Van’t Hof swept, 6-1, 6-1, 6-0, in singles as Mater Dei began the season 4-0 for the first time in 37 years.

In nonleague boys’ volleyball:

Cypress 3, Saddleback 2--Zane Bermundo and Justin Lee had 18 kills each, and Justin Conde made 30 assists as Cypress handed visiting Saddleback its first loss, 15-12, 5-15, 13-15, 15-13, 15-5.

El Dorado 3, Tustin 2--Junior middle blocker David Patten had 28 kills and 10 blocks, and senior Nick Lehner had 25 kills and 18 digs for visiting El Dorado (2-1), which won, 7-15, 15-12, 5-15, 15-11, 115-9.

Newport Harbor sweeps--The Sailors, ranked sixth in the county, won all three of their matches in the San Diego Tournament of Champions. Blake Tippett had 26 kills to lead Newport Harbor, which beat San Diego Scripps Ranch, 15-5, 15-9, Las Vegas Chaparral, 9-15, 15-11, 15-8, and Fresno Bullard, 15-7, 15-12.
