Libraries as ‘Lifelines’

Re “Stirring a Virtual Melting Pot,” Feb. 20.
This article highlighted the use of Internet cafes in New York City. It described such places as pay-by-the-hour “lifelines” for immigrants, tourists and those who cannot afford computers and Internet access.
Public libraries are a much better lifeline for all those users and many more. Libraries in New York City, like libraries everywhere, offer public Internet access.
The Ventura County Library sees a huge interest in public Internet access. People are coming to the library to use Internet resources for school, job or other assignments and interests.
In addition, a growing number of tourists stop by the library to read hometown newspapers and check their e-mail.
