Roy L. Furr; Retired Oxnard Fire Official

Roy L. Furr of Oxnard, former assistant chief with the city’s Fire Department, has died at the age of 76.

Furr died Thursday after a sudden illness. He was born Aug. 17, 1924, in Bristol, Texas. His family moved to Ventura County when he was 6.

He served in the Army, including with the 82nd Airborne as a combat medic during World War II and the Korean War. He was awarded numerous medals, including the Korean Service Medal with two bronze stars.

During his 28 years as a firefighter in Oxnard, he served in nearly every position. His duties over the years included apparatus and equipment evaluation, personnel supervision, budget officer and building and public safety inspections. He retired in 1981.

Furr served on the Ventura County Grand Jury in 1996. He was a member of the Elks and Kiwanis clubs and a volunteer for Food Share.

Furr is survived by his wife, Geraldine; a sister, Bessie Lovin of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and two brothers, Jerry of Salinas and Bill of Tucson, Ariz.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at James A. Reardon Mortuary in Oxnard. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the mortuary, with Chaplain Daniel Green of the Oxnard Fire Department officiating. Burial will follow at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura.
