* STYLE OF PLAY: By the second half of the season, USC had changed from a running team to one that plays the patient, halfcourt game. Oklahoma State will try to speed things up by pressuring USC all over the floor.

* MATCHUP TO WATCH: Jeff Trepagnier against Maurice Baker. Look for Henry Bibby to put his most athletic defender on the Cowboys’ best offensive player.

* INTANGIBLES: The tournament-experience gap is huge. Eddie Sutton has taken four teams to the tournament, the Cowboys eight times in 11 seasons. This is USC’s second NCAA trip withBibby.

* MAGIC NUMBERS: Both teams were 6-4 in their last 10 games. But the Cowboys are coming off a second-round loss to Texas in the Big 12 tournament. USC won its last two games over Washington and Washington State by a combined 44 points.

* FINAL ANALYSIS: If the Trojans are calm enough to survive the opening five minutes of emotional energy the Cowboys will receive from the crowd, they will defeat Oklahoma State in a close game.
