Mayor Jerry Brown made it official Friday, filing his candidate intention statement for next year’s mayoral election.

The former two-term California governor, who was elected Oakland mayor in June 1998, read a statement as his official notice of candidacy was filed at City Hall. He said he will continue to focus on jobs, crime reduction, education and civic creativity.

“Oakland is a city where many visions have their home,” he said. “My commitment is to incorporate these varied perspectives and yet maintain the momentum that a dynamic Bay Area economy makes possible.

“I believe that Oakland can best serve all its residents by continuing to attract new investment,” he said. “As more businesses locate here and more underutilized land is improved, the city as a whole prospers: Jobs increase, blight declines and crime diminishes.”
