Biscayne Bay Sewage Spill Closes Beaches
A ruptured sewage pipe that spilled millions of gallons of raw waste into Miami’s Biscayne Bay closed some of the city’s beaches this weekend to swimming and fishing in an echo of a similar spill last summer.
A rupture last June of a line at Miami Beach Marina resulted in a spillage that closed a strip of beaches in the area for more than a week.
Beaches on Key Biscayne, along the causeway and on Virginia Key were closed after Thursday’s incident near the Port of Miami. The rupture may have been caused by a tugboat hitting part of the pipeline.
The spill--as much as 12 million gallons of raw sewage--was halted after about four hours.
