POSITION BY POSITION

* Forward: Tayshaun Prince and Jason Parker are the speed and power of the Wildcats. Unless USC Coach Henry Bibby resorts to a trick defense, David Bluthenthal will not only have to guard Prince but supply enough offense to keep him busy. Expect Parker, in the beginning, to guard Sam Clancy, a matchup Clancy should feast upon.

* Center: Kentucky doesn’t have a true center, often going with a three- and sometimes four-guard lineup. If Parker guards Clancy, Coach Tubby Smith will have to go with Marvin Stone or Marquis Estill against Brian Scalabrine. This is probably the matchup that concerns Smith most.

* Guard: This is the Trojans’ biggest challenge. Saul Smith has five inches on Brandon Granville, has quickness and hasn’t overworked at the point like Granville has. Keith Bogans, the Wildcats’ other main scorer besides Prince, will try to keep Jeff Trepagnier occupied, but may not be able to hang with Trepagnier’s explosive leaping ability.

* Coaching: Depending on what day it is, Smith is either leaving Kentucky after the tournament or is about to sign a four-year extension. If he does leave, he can pick any job not taken by Rick Pitino or Bob Knight. Bibby signed his extension before the season started. Getting the Trojans to the Sweet 16 has raised his profile.

* The Edge: Kentucky may have added seven new players this season, but the Wildcats are playoff veterans compared to the Trojans. The Wildcats should be less blinded by the bright round of 16 lights than USC.
