GYMNASTICS

The Cal State Fullerton women’s gymnastics team will be seeking its first Big West Conference championship since 1995 when the Titans compete Saturday at UC Santa Barbara.

“It looks like it’s going to be a dogfight between us and Boise State,” Titan Coach Julie Knight said. “We’re very close.”

Fullerton’s regional qualifying score was 194.6; Boise State’s was 194.47. The host Gauchos and Utah State also are in the four-team field.

Knight said she thinks Titan sophomore Kelly Mathiasen has a good chance of winning the conference all-around title.

UC Irvine’s Erick Helenihi, a 6-foot-8 junior middle blocker, was named national player of the week by the American Volleyball Coaches Assn. He is only the second Irvine player to win the honor. UCI’s Donnie Rafter, formerly of Tustin High, was selected in 1999.

Helenihi, from Villa Park High, had 30 kills Saturday in a five-game win over then sixth-ranked Pepperdine. Irvine is ranked ninth.
