Chicago legend Buddy Guy connects with his Delta blues roots on his upcoming album, “Sweet Tea,” in which the guitarist performs songs by the likes of R.L. Burnside, Junior Kimbrough and T-Model Ford, with some help from Jim Mathus (Squirrel Nut Zippers), Pete Thomas (Elvis Costello & the Attractions) and Bobby Whitlock (Derek & the Dominos).

Opening with a performance by Yolanda King, daughter of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., in her theater work, “Achieving the Dream,” the “Los Angeles Women’s Theatre Festival 2001: Breaking New Ground” presents five themed days of theater, dance, performance art, poetry, comedy and storytelling, with 28 local, Russian, Brazilian and English performers.

Riding high on the international exposure and awards (including the Tony) that he earned for his “Lion King” choreography, Jamaican American dance-maker and teacher Garth Fagan brings his handpicked modern dance ensemble to two Southland venues this weekend. Each program by Garth Fagan Dance will begin with the prelude to “Discipline Is Freedom” and end with “Woza.” Otherwise, the rep differs. Irvine audiences get “Sonata and the Afternoon,” “Touring Jubilee 1924 (Professional)” and “Two Pieces of One: Green” on Thursday, while the Cal State L.A. public sees “Nkanyit” and “Trips and Trysts” on Saturday. Sorry, no wart hogs or wildebeests this time around.
