Michel Extraordinary for El Camino Real

Jesse Michel wishes he could play night baseball games every week.

Michel had two doubles, two triples and four runs batted in as El Camino Real High defeated Birmingham, 12-0, on Friday night in a West Valley League game halted after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Four-time City champion El Camino Real (6-3, 1-1 in league play) got its revenge for a 13-1, five-inning loss to Birmingham three days earlier.

“It was definitely embarrassing,” Michel said. “With our tradition, we don’t play games like that.”

Birmingham (5-4, 1-1) scored 36 runs in its previous three games, but the Patriots had not faced a pitcher the caliber of Greg Acheatel, who threw a five-hitter, striking out three and walking none.

Second baseman Kasey Caplan continued his torrid hitting with a double, making him 10 for 20 this season for El Camino Real.

Acheatel, who pitched well under the lights last season in the City Championship game at Dodger Stadium, gave rave reviews to Birmingham’s new lights and field.

“The field itself is incredible,” he said. “It’s better than any golf course you step on. Playing here raises the game to another level.”

The next night game at Birmingham is scheduled for Tuesday at 6:30 between Mission League rivals Chaminade and Crespi.
