Sigma Alpha Epsilon and its fellow Greek organizations are no longer welcome at Santa Clara University.

The school announced it will phase out fraternities and sororities on campusby June 2003.

The decision follows a five-month study of the Greek system by a committee of faculty, staff and students. The committee had recommended continuing the Greek system, with modifications. But the school’s president says the university needs to support programs that will benefit the most students.

Students who are members of one of four fraternities or four sororities will be able to retain their affiliations until graduation, but new members cannot be recruited.
