Bolsa Chica Vital as an Estuary

Share

* Re “In a Surprise Development, Bolsa Chica Just Might Survive,” Orange County Voices, March 11:

Thanks for publishing that wonderful article about Bolsa Chica by Evan C. Henry. As a senior citizen, I have often walked the path around the wetlands and have so enjoyed it. To me there are no birds quite as wonderful and interesting as those of Bolsa Chica. I have taken my granddaughters on walks there since they were 2 and have always been amazed at how much they remember about the birds we have seen.

They, like their parents, and I have so appreciated the recent Huntington Beach City Council decision to try to purchase the mesa. We have walked the path so often and climbed the hill to sit on the benches of the mesa and eat a snack while enjoying the view. It is an experience that they and I will never forget.

* Re “City to Seek Funds for Bolsa Chica” (March 7):

I support our City Council for its decision to begin talks with the owner of the mesa and to seek funds to buy it.

I have lived near Bolsa Chica since 1970 and know how valuable it is to keep as a reserve. Have you walked through the three-mile stretch and looked at the different species that thrive at the reserve? Or enjoyed a bit of the open space, which is getting scarcer these days?

We need to have the entire mesa preserved as an integral part of the whole ecosystem. Without it we would lose many species of wildlife, and it would be a very sad day for ourselves and our children.

* Many citizens of Huntington Beach are very proud of our new mayor and City Council for seeking to preserve the entire Bolsa Chica mesa for all citizens to enjoy. This inspiring, priceless, ocean-view buffer zone protects birds and animals of the estuary from intrusions by humans and their pets. It expresses the symbiotic relationship between us and our wildlife friends. The council action aims to deter ecological and pollution damage that threatens our city.

* I strongly support the Huntington Beach City Council and Coastal Commission decision on the Bolsa Chica mesa. This land needs to be protected and saved from development for all of us and future generations. I am writing to urge that funds be raised and set aside for this purpose. We cannot build over such an ecologically sensitive and aesthetic area.
