Murphy Lays Down Law and Matadors Defeat Pacific, 6-2

Bill Murphy pitched seven strong innings and Cal State Northridge defeated Pacific, 6-2, on Saturday in a nonconference baseball game in Stockton.

Murphy (5-2) allowed two runs on six hits while striking out 10 and walking two.

Ryan Haag drove in three runs with a home run, a run-scoring triple and a run-scoring single for the Matadors (17-9).

Mike Frick earned his fourth save, facing five batters in 1 1/3 innings with one strikeout and one walk.

Jason Walker (5-2) struck out six and walked four for Pacific (15-14).

Oxnard 8, Citrus 7--Jared Krehbiel hit a three-run home run in the seventh and Josh Miller scored on a wild pitch in the ninth to give the Condors (15-8, 9-2 in conference play) a Western State Conference interdivisional victory at Oxnard.

Pepperdine 11, San Diego 3--Noah Lowry (7-1) allowed two runs in seven innings and the Waves moved into first place in the West Coast Conference with a victory at San Diego.

Jared Pitney had three hits and two runs batted in for the Waves (17-9, 6-2).

Lowry, a junior left-hander from Nordhoff High, had eight strikeouts.

The Waves scored five runs each in the third and eighth innings.

Center fielder Woody Cliffords, formerly of El Camino Real High, had three hits and three RBIs for Pepperdine.

San Diego is 17-11, 5-3. The series concludes today.

Canyons 8, Ventura 1--Nolan LeMar was five for five, including a three-run triple, with six RBIs for the Cougars in a WSC interdivisional game at Ventura.

Travis Allen (3-2) pitched seven innings, allowing one hit and three walks with 10 strikeouts for Canyons (9-13-1, 5-6).

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

Kennedy 12, North Hollywood 2--Brandon Burton allowed two unearned runs in five innings for the Golden Cougars in a second-round game of the Redondo Union tournament at Kennedy that was called after six innings because of the 10-run rule.

Burton (1-0) had two strikeouts and one walk.

Danny Mata had three hits, including two doubles, and scored three times for the Golden Cougars (9-2).

Adam Geery, Phil Avlas and Tim St. Pierre each had two hits and two RBIs for Kennedy.

St. Pierre hit a two-run home run.

Granada Hills 13, Reseda 0--Sean Tuber (1-0) pitched a four-hitter in his first outing, striking out five for the Highlanders (6-4) in a Chatsworth tournament game at Granada Hills.

Mike Seiser’s grand slam sparked a nine-run second inning.

Thousand Oaks 7, Garfield 6--Chad Lundahl’s fielder’s choice in the eighth inning drove in the winning run for the Lancers in a Redondo tournament consolation game at Garfield.

Damian Fante had a run-scoring triple, a single and a run-scoring groundout for the Lancers (5-5).

Kyle Ayers (1-0) of Thousand Oaks pitched four scoreless innings, allowing one hit with three strikeouts and one walk.

Newbury Park 5, University 4--Steven Hartman’s eighth-inning single lifted the Panthers to a Redondo Union tournament consolation victory at Newbury Park.

Matt Eisenstein had three hits, including a run-scoring double for the Panthers (6-3-1).

Westlake 9, Camarillo 2--Jamie Hesselgesser had two hits and two RBIs, and Tyler Carr had two hits in a six-run seventh inning for the Warriors (6-3-1) in a nonleague victory at Camarillo (8-3).

Chatsworth 8, Grant 0--Sean Richards pitched a three-hitter for the Chancellors, ranked No. 1 in the region by The Times, in a second-round game of the Chatsworth tournament at Chatsworth.

Richards (1-0) struck out four and walked two.

Justin Cassel drove in three runs with only one hit and Gregg Wallis had two hits for Chatsworth (11-0).

Moises Saldivar had two hits for Grant (7-4).

TRACK AND FIELD

Northridge Invitational--Melissa Astete of Birmingham High, three-time City Section champion competing unattached against 14 college athletes, won the women’s pole vault at 12 feet.

Jennifer Capehart of Northridge was second at 11-6, with Lisa Rugenstein of Northridge third at 11 feet.

American Community College Invitational--Lucais MacKay of Moorpark won the shotput, discus and hammer throw to help the Raiders finish second in Sacramento.

Erin Brzezinski won the 100 meters in 12.33 and placed second in the 200 in 25.79 as the Moorpark women finished second.

Shelaine Larson of Moorpark won the shotput at 43-6 and the discus at 158-6. She was fourth in the hammer throw at 132-9.
