Irvine Can’t Wear Down 2nd-Ranked Hawaii in Volleyball
Second-ranked Hawaii rebounded from a first-set loss to defeat UC Irvine, 31-33, 34-32, 34-32, 30-23, in a Mountain Sports Federation men’s volleyball match Wednesday at Irvine.
The ninth-ranked Anteaters trailed early in each of the first three games. They erased a 5-1 deficit in the first, and trailed, 16-8, in the second game before tying the Rainbows, 23-23.
The Anteaters led, 29-25, in the third game, but the Rainbows turned back four game-point attempts and eventually won.
Costas Theocharidis led Hawaii (15-3, 10-2) with 26 kills, while setter Kimo Tuyay added 58 assists. Erik Helenihi had 21 kills and Todd Steinert contributed 66 assists for the Anteaters (9-11, 5-8).
In nonconference baseball:
Chapman 6, Concordia 4--Kyle Schoonover and Andy Karp each collected three hits as visiting Chapman (16-5) extended its winning streak to nine games.
