Injury Turns Blue-Liner Into Forward

Share

Winger Jonas Ronnqvist did not play Thursday against the San Jose Sharks because of an abdominal strain, prompting Coach Guy Charron to play seven defensemen.

Actually, Charron had no choice since there were only 11 healthy forwards available.

Charron might have scratched Ronnqvist even if he had been healthy, however. Charron was concerned that defenseman Vitaly Vishnevski’s injured shoulder, which sidelined him for three games, wasn’t yet sound. Vishnevski played a regular shift.

So Charron moved defenseman Pascal Trepanier onto a line with center Samuel Pahlsson and winger German Titov. Trepanier also played at least one shift with center Matt Cullen and winger Jeff Friesen.

Ronnqvist’s status for tonight’s game against the Vancouver Canucks is uncertain. He has four assists in 38 games for the Ducks in his first NHL season.
