Al Hibbler

* Al Hibbler was a household name in the late 1950s, not for his being with the Duke Ellington band or even for his No. 3 hit, “Unchained Melody” (obituary, April 28).

It was his distinct vocal style in his 1957 recording “After the Lights Go Down Low” that made him so popular with teenagers of my generation. We played that record over and over again. We imitated his English-sounding “after” in that recording. And we danced to its sweet but sexy words and music over and over again.
