Her Future Is Bright After First Victory

Russy Gulyanamitta of Huntington Beach, who turned professional in March, won the Futures Tour Coleman Classic Sunday in Wichita, Kan.

Gulyanamitta, originally from Thailand, shot 67-71-69--207 and finished a stroke ahead of Taiwan’s Connie Wei. She won $8,400 for the victory and moved into ninth on the money list. The top three finishers on the final money list earn an automatic exemption to the LPGA Tour.

It was only the fifth professional start for Gulyanamitta, who won the state community college championship while playing for Cypress College in the fall. She was also runner-up in the U.S. Women’s Public Links last summer.

In her four previous professional starts, Gulyanamitta had missed the cut twice, finished 14th and 49th.

PELICAN BACK IN PICTURE

After deals with two other Southern California courses fell through, the Hyundai Team Matches may be returning to Pelican Hill.

Tournament director Gary Pollard said Ocean Trails in Palos Verdes and Desert Willow in Palm Desert were in the running to host the unofficial professional event, but the deals could not be completed.

“We had a deal that was about to be consummated with Desert Willow,” Pollard said. “But the PGA Tour didn’t want to add another event in the desert.”

The Bob Hope Chrysler Classic, the Skins Game and the Battle at Bighorn already are in the Palm Springs area.

Pelican Hill has been criticized for its unfriendliness to spectators, but it might be the last option.

“We’re in negotiations,” Pollard said. “That’s all I can say.”

He expects to know more by the middle of the month.
