Earthquakes Quell Revolution

Dwayne DeRosario and Zak Ibsen scored second-half goals Saturday night to lead the San Jose Earthquakes to a 3-2 victory over the New England Revolution before 8,137 at San Jose.

Troy Dayak opened the scoring for San Jose in the 27th minute off a feed from Jeff Agoos. Dayak has scored five of his six career goals against the Revolution.

A defensive miscue by New England led to San Jose’s second goal.

Revolution goalie Juergen Sommer collided with teammate Rusty Pierce while leaping for a crossing pass. DeRosario scrambled after the loose ball and scored into an empty net in the 71st minute.

Eight minutes later, Sommer made a diving block of a shot by Ibsen. But Ibsen followed with a shot that resulted in San Jose’s third goal.

New York-New Jersey 3, D.C. United 2--Petter Villegas’ goal in the final seconds capped a three-goal rally as the MetroStars won before 20,877 at East Rutherford, N.J.

Clint Mathis scored in the 80th minute, Rodrigo Faria tied the score in the 88th minute and Villegas scored the winner in the 90th minute.

The victory was the third in a row for the MetroStars. Jaime Moreno scored two goals for D.C. United.

Chicago 2, Tampa Bay 0--Dema Kovalenko and Eric Wynalda scored second-half goals to lead the Fire to victory before 13,123 at Chicago.

Kovalenko lifted a shot past Mutiny goalkeeper Scott Garlick from 10 yards out in the 51st minute.

Wynalda, traded from New England to Chicago on Thursday, scored in the 61st minute.

Colorado 1, Dallas 0--Paul Bravo scored in the 87th minute to lead the Rapids to victory before 14,504 at Dallas.

Dallas’ Joselito Vaca had a goal disallowed in the 82nd minute because of an offside call.

Columbus 0, Miami 0--Alex Pineda Chacon missed on two scoring chances in the first half as the Fusion battled the Crew to a tie before 13,975 at Columbus, Ohio.

Homare Sawa’s second-half goal led the Atlanta Beat to a 1-0 victory over the Boston Breakers before 11,714 at Boston.

Beat forward Cindy Parlow made a crossing pass to Charmaine Hooper, who left a perfect setup for Sawa. Sawa then beat Breaker goalie Tracy Ducar with a low shot in the 62nd minute.

San Diego 2, Washington 0--Shannon MacMillan scored two goals to lead the Spirit to victory before 6,156 at San Diego. MacMillan’s goal in the 33rd minute ended a 213-minute scoring drought for San Diego.

The game had been billed as Cinco de Mia, in honor of Washington’s Mia Hamm, who led the Freedom against fellow U.S. World Cup champion teammate Julie Foudy and the Spirit.
