Politician Slain; Basque Rebels Blamed
A politician from the ruling Popular Party was shot to death in an attack blamed on the Basque separatist group ETA.
Manuel Gimenez Abad, 52, head of the party in the northern region of Aragon, was struck in the head as he walked with his son to a soccer match in the city of Zaragoza, a government spokesman said.
No group claimed responsibility, but police blamed the ETA. Near the body, police found shells from a 9-millimeter pistol, which they said is the preferred weapon of the ETA, whose initials stand for Basque Homeland and Freedom.
The killing comes a week before a critical May 13 parliamentary election in the Basque region.
