City to Chip In More for Golf Course Work
The city will kick in an additional $1.7 million so golfers don’t have to shoulder the full cost of overruns from renovations to city-owned Los Robles Golf Course.
City Council members voted unanimously this week to free up the money from the city’s general fund. The money will pay for cost overruns for the refurbishment of the public banquet hall at the site.
In 1999, the renovation was estimated at $10.2 million. But in the last two years, increased construction costs, including design changes and drainage issues, pushed the cost to $11.7 million.
Additionally, about $200,000 of expected repairs would be difficult to pay for with greens fees, finance officials said. That is because the course has only been open for limited play during the renovations, reducing the money coming in.
Asking golfers to make up for the extra costs might have increased greens fees by two times as much or more, city officials said.
