Postal Service’s Food Drive Today

Postal Service employees are encouraging all residents to put out nonperishable, unopened food beside their mailboxes by 10 a.m. today as part of the office’s ninth annual food drive.
Last year the Postal Service took in 3.5 million pounds of food nationwide and the agency hopes to break that record this year, said Terri Bouffiou, a Postal Service spokeswoman.
Bouffiou said people are encouraged to put out such items as canned food, rice, pasta, tuna, toothpaste, cereal and Spam. She said diapers are also needed for families. Items collected will be sent to food banks across Southern California.
Postal carriers in Ventura County hope to collect 55,000 pounds of food for Food Share, the county’s largest food bank, which helps feed 33,000 county residents each month.
