High School Shares Top Prize in Contest

It may have taken a lot for Simi Valley High School Principal Jan Britz to stand in a tub of noodles and sing the Offspring’s “Pretty Fly for a White Guy” at a school assembly.

And it couldn’t have been easy for 106 of the school’s students to have the letters “KROQ” tanned onto their foreheads.

But the payoff came Friday, when the school was chosen one of two winners of a “Punk Rock Prom” contest staged by Los Angeles radio station KROQ-FM (106.7).

By completing 10 tasks each, including gathering food for the homeless, Simi Valley High and Fountain Valley High School in Orange County will receive exclusive performances by the Offspring and Weezer at Six Flags Magic Mountain next week and $5,000 each to spend at Best Buy.

“The kids are really jazzed,” Simi Valley’s activities director Beth Hopp said.

Another Simi Valley school won the station’s top prize last year. Santa Susana High School students received a private concert with Blink-182.
