Congressman Killed During Campaign Stop
A congressman and his bodyguard were shot and killed as the lawmaker was getting out of his car to attend a campaign rally for his wife two days before elections in the Philippines, police said.
Rep. Marcial Punzalan Jr. is the highest official to be killed during the campaign. At stake in today’s elections are half the seats in the Senate, the entire House of Representatives and 17,600 municipal and provincial posts.
Analysts say results could influence whether President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is viewed as having a mandate to govern.
