U.S. Contributions to the United Nations

Re “U.N. Shot in the Eye Was Quite Deliberate,” Commentary, May 13: The European politicians responsible for booting the U.S. out of the United Nations Human Rights Commission and narcotics board are the same socialists and former communists (now in power in France, Germany, Italy and other European Union nations) who have long sought to humiliate the U.S. in world affairs.

Jesse Jackson unfortunately missed the long-standing agendas and motivations of those politicians now in office in Europe, placing the blame instead on the Bush administration for its recent decisions on the environment and missile defenses.

The United Nations, however, needs the U.S. more than the U.S. needs it. Congress will likely pull the plug on U.S. contributions to the U.N. precisely because it knows that there is no political cost involved. The United Nations’ recent actions will do nothing to raise Americans’ appreciation of its already tarnished role in world affairs.
