Let’s Save Electricity by Leaving the Office Early

“In Office Buildings, the Lights Are On, but Nobody’s Home” [May 10] suggests to me that the Los Angeles metropolitan region has some opportunities to maintain or improve our lifestyles.
Rolling blackouts are most likely in the later afternoon and early evening when people return home, turn on air conditioning and start cooking. Building managers and employers ought to be encouraged to--and even urged to take pledges to--clear out their offices and turn off the lights and air conditioning no later than 4:30 p.m. or 5 p.m. Air conditioning can be turned on in time for the beginning of the following workday.
Employers could stagger office hours to get some employees out of their offices by 4 p.m. This would reduce traffic congestion.
