CBS Tips Its Monday Comedy Crown

Thanks to a sturdy lineup of hit comedies, CBS is the king of Monday nights.

Two of those royally successful sitcoms complete their respective seasons tonight, the first being “The King of Queens,” which delivers a one-hour finale at 8 p.m. involving Carrie’s unexpected pregnancy.

Unfortunately, she’s freaking out at the news. “We’re broke. We’re unprepared. And I drop things,” she sheepishly tells her hefty hubby Doug (Kevin James), who’s more than willing to share the burden by beefing up their bank account with a second job as a limo driver.

Along the way, Carrie (Leah Remini) daydreams about how their lives would play out with a bouncing baby boy who looks just like Doug. It’s not a pretty sight. It’s not a very funny one either.

True to past form, there’s a lot of yelling in the boisterous episode, which also finds Doug spreading himself too thin (no pun intended) by promising to build a bathroom for his bellicose father-in-law Arthur (Jerry Stiller), who really wants an “ergonomically correct” toilet.

Most of the show is rather shrill and silly, but a dramatic sequence in the waning moments catches us off guard and nearly redeems it, with James and Remini playing off each other quite nicely.
