A $6-million plan to preserve 19,000 acres has been approved in the most expensive land-conservation project undertaken by Sonoma County’s Open Space District.

Cooley Ranch, one of the largest private land holdings in Northern California, would receive permanent protection from development under a proposal that received backing from the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors last week.

In exchange for the cash, owner Crawford Cooley and his family have tentatively agreed to give up the right to build about 100 homes.
