Last year: Tom Scherrer won his first tour title, beating Steve Lowery, Justin Leonard, Greg Chalmers, Kazuhiko Hosokawa and Franklin Langham by two strokes.
Notes: Tiger Woods is skipping the tournament. He won last week in Germany for his fourth victory in five starts. . . . Aaron Baddeley, the 20-year-old Australian who won the Australian Open as an amateur and pro the last two seasons, is making his sixth PGA Tour start of the year. He has made only one cut, tying for 61st last month in the Greater Greensboro Chrysler Classic. . . . Phil Mickelson, making his fourth consecutive start, has seven top-three finishes in 13 events. . . . The Memorial is next week in Dublin, Ohio.

SENIOR PGA TOUR
Senior PGA Championship
Site: Paramus, N.J.
Schedule: Today-Sunday.
Course: Ridgewood Country Club (6,904 yards, par 72).
Purse: $1.8 million. Winner’s share: $324,000.
TV: ESPN (today, 9-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m.; Friday, 9-1 p.m.) and Ch. 4 (Saturday, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.; Sunday, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.).
Last year: Doug Tewell became the 12th player to win his first senior title in a major championship. He led wire-to-wire for a seven-stroke victory in the rain-shortened tournament at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
Notes: Lee Trevino won the 1990 U.S. Senior Open on the A.W. Tillinghast-designed course. . . . The tournament, played at PGA National from 1982-2000, is the second senior major of the year. Tewell won the Tradition in April in Scottsdale, Ariz. . . . Hale Irwin won three consecutive titles from 1996-98. . . . The BellSouth Senior Classic is next week in Nashville.

LPGA TOUR
Corning Classic

Last year: Hall of Famer Betsy King won her 33rd tour title, beating Kelli Kuehne and Vicki Goetze-Ackerman with a birdie on second hole of a playoff. King also won the 1991 tournament.
Notes: Annika Sorenstam is taking the week off to prepare for the U.S. Women’s Open next week at Pine Needles in Southern Pines, N.C. The Swedish star leads the tour with five victories and $1,013,890 in 10 starts. . . . Dottie Pepper, the 1981 New York State Amateur champion at 15, has seven top-10 finishes without a victory this year. She tied for fifth last week in Ohio.
