Undefeated World Boxing Council super-featherweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. built a big lead and battled through injuries to both hands Saturday before scoring a unanimous decision over Carlos Hernandez.

One of boxing’s rising stars, Mayweather (26-0, 19 KOs) made his seventh defense, and second in his hometown. He nearly had Hernandez down in the third round, landing a couple of straight right hands just over one minute into the round. Mayweather also stunned Hernandez with a left hook to the jaw with 28 seconds left in the round.

Hernandez was awarded a knockdown in the sixth when Mayweather’s glove touched the canvas. The champion winced several times in the sixth when it became apparent that his hand was bothering him. He spent the majority of the final four rounds using his foot speed to stay away from a charging Hernandez (33-3-1).

“Tonight was a rough night,” Mayweather said. “I hurt my left hand and later on in the fight I hurt my right hand. I came into the fight with two messed up hands. But that’s no excuse. I wanted to fight and put on a good show.”

It’s a part of boxing, the main thing is I got through this tonight.”
