Seventh-day Adventists to Mark a Centennial

Members of Seventh-day Adventist churches in Los Angeles, Ventura, Kern and Santa Barbara counties will gather at the Los Angeles Convention Center today in celebration of the Southern California Conference’s 100th anniversary.

The day will include a Sabbath school for adults and children at 9 a.m. followed by a service at 10:45 a.m. with Charles Bradford, former president of the denomination’s North American division. A 3 p.m. conference will focus on the theme “Together We Can,” examining how the church is meeting the challenges of service, ministry, education and healing in Southern California.

The event also will feature music by the Centennial Celebration Chorale, which consists of 250 voices, with soloists Arlene Thomas and Jessie Martin performing Opus 7 and the Heritage Singers, an Adventist singing group that has toured internationally for more than 30 years.

EVENTS

The University of Judaism will sponsor “Jewish Tours of Mormon Temple Hill and Introduction to Jewish Genealogy” from 1 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Latter-day Saints Temple, 10777 Santa Monica Blvd., Westwood. The program features a presentation on the similarities and differences between Judaism and Mormonism. A similar program will be offered at the Hsi Lai Buddhist Temple on Nov. 11 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Buddhist tour will give an overview of the history and development of Buddhism. Comparisons between Buddhism and Judaism also will be presented. The Mormon tour costs $25, the Buddhist tour costs $35. (310) 440-1246.

* The San Fernando Valley Interfaith Council and the National Council of the Church of Christ will sponsor this year’s “Crop Walk” at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Martin in the Fields Church, 7136 Winnetka Ave., Winnetka. * Grace Lutheran Church will hold its annual holiday bazaar from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at 4427 Overland Ave., Culver City. The event will feature handicrafts, ornaments, jewelry and food. The church’s youth group also will sponsor a yard sale in front of the church. (310) 559-1027.

* St. Alban’s Episcopal Church will hold a lecture series entitled “Conversations at St. Alban’s” at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at 580 Hilgard Ave., Los Angeles. “Unfolding United Religions” will be the topic of a discussion led by Bishop William Swing. * “Gospelfest,” sponsored by the McDonald’s Operators Assn. of Southern California and presented by the Staples Center Foundation, will be from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. today at the Shrine Civic Auditorium, 649 W. Jefferson Blvd., Los Angeles. The McDonald’s Gospelfest is a five-month search for the best amateur gospel groups and choirs in Southern California. The competition’s finalists will be joined by top gospel performers and last year’s winning youth choir, “Soldiers on Soul Patrol.” Tickets are $20 to $30.
