Judge Hug, 24 Years on Federal Bench, to Retire
Federal appeals court Judge Proctor Hug is retiring after 24 years on the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.
Hug, a Reno native, notified President Bush this week of his intent to take senior status effective Jan. 1, according to a statement released by Sens. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and John Ensign (R-Nev.).
Hug, who was appointed to the appeals court in San Francisco by former President Carter on Sept. 15, 1977, served as chief judge from March 1, 1996, until he stepped down on Dec. 1, 2000.
Hug is also a former Nevada regent and deputy attorney general.
