Howard Korder’s “Search and Destroy” circles back to Orange County, where it was birthed at South Coast Repertory in 1990. The play, which in 1995 became a film with Griffin Dunne, John Turturro and Christopher Walken, concerns Martin Mirkheim, who is determined to do anything to satisfy his grand obsession: making a film of a self-help guru’s novel he feels holds the secret to life. Indeed, Korder’s theme is that Americans’ sense of entitlement permits them to do anything to avoid being trod upon. Heading up the Rude Guerrilla Theater Company’s “Search and Destroy” mission are actor Jay Michael Fraley and director Sharyn Case, company members who have done stellar work in the past. * “Search and Destroy,” Empire Theater, 200 N. Broadway, Santa Ana. Fridays-Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sundays, 2:30 p.m. Ends Dec. 2. $12 to $15. (714) 547-4688.

Plays used to be made into movies. When “Victor/Victoria” hit Broadway in 1995, it was an early example of the recent trend in which a famous film (“The Full Monty,” “The Producers”) is turned into a stage show. The musical concerns Victoria, a hapless 1930s Parisian chanteuse who finds a path to fame by posing as an aristocratic male, Victor. Julie Andrews played the lead both in the 1982 movie and 13 years later on Broadway; a cast of UC Irvine student actors and dancers takes a whirl at it this time. Henry Mancini was the composer, with book by Blake Edwards and lyrics by Leslie Bricusse.* “Victor/Victoria,” Irvine Barclay Theatre, 4242 Campus Drive, Irvine. Thursdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sunday, 2 p.m. Ends Nov. 17. $15 to $20. (949) 854-4646 or (949) 824-2787.
