From Times Staff Reports

A West Covina man drowned while trying to rescue a co-worker who had slipped into a Vulcan Mining Co. quarry Friday.

John Garcia, 41, jumped into the water after a 65-year-old man slipped down a steep embankment into 80-foot-deep water, said Capt. Brian Jordan of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The unidentified employee scrambled to safety by grabbing a hose. Garcia disappeared into the water and was pulled out four hours after the 9:50 a.m. accident, Jordan said. OSHA and the Mining Safety and Health Assn. will investigate the accident, he added.
