OCTA Bike Plan Story Was Misleading

Re “Plan to Add 720 Miles of Bike Paths Is OKd,” Aug. 28:

The article was misleading. The misleading information was apparently supplied by the Orange County Transportation Authority.

The plan referred to is the OCTA bike plan, entitled the Commuter Bikeways Strategic Plan, which I’m familiar with, since I was involved with development of both original (1995) and updated (2001) versions.

Although I have not bicycled since 1995, when I was hit by a car and severely injured, I’m extremely familiar with the Orange County bikeways system, having personally bicycled about 200,000 miles there. I believe OCTA’s claim to have added 720 miles to be misleading, possibly deliberately so. I challenge them to support their claim.

Bicycle transportation and commuting can--and already do--benefit the working poor and help reduce traffic congestion, and should be treated seriously.
