A 26-year-old man was sentenced Friday to 38 years to life in prison, plus two life terms, for the traffic-stop shooting of an Anaheim police officer, who was hit in the face but survived.

Juan Carlos Alcaraz of Santa Ana will have to serve 43 years before he is eligible for parole, prosecutors said.

A judge in Orange County Superior Court in Fullerton also imposed $40,000 in fines and ordered Alcaraz to pay restitution to Officer Thomas Kasey Geary in an amount to be determined later.

Alcaraz testified that he was not trying to kill the officer. He said that he aimed at the officer’s bulletproof vest but that Geary ducked and the bullet tore through his cheek.
