Split Decisions for UCLA and USC

Both the UCLA and USC women’s basketball teams rallied in the second half of their season openers Friday, but only one came out a winner.

Led by Michelle Greco’s 24 points, including 17 in the second half, UCLA pulled out a 62-55 victory against Liberty in the first round of the Chevrolet Spartan Classic at East Lansing, Mich.

USC, on the other hand, used a 22-0 second-half run to get back into its game, but it wasn’t enough as St. Joseph’s held on for an 81-72 victory at Philadelphia.

In UCLA’s game, the Bruins trailed, 31-21, at halftime and by as many as 14 points in the first half before coming back.

A 13-2 run midway through the second half got the Bruins going as they took their first lead at 43-42 after a basket by Malika Leatham.

“We came out a little nervous tonight,” said Bruin Coach Kathy Olivier. “We had two exhibition games, but it is a little different when it’s for real and on the road. Greco came through in the second half. She really wanted the ball. That is what makes her special.”

Greco made only six of 14 shots, including two three-point baskets, but was 10 for 13 from the free-throw line. Leatham finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

UCLA will play Michigan State today for the championship.

Despite USC’s rally, the Trojans couldn’t overcome a career-high 36 points by St. Joseph’s Susan Moran.

Moran, who made 14 of 17 shots and all eight of her free throws, scored 15 of St. Joseph’s first 19 points as the Hawks took a 42-28 halftime lead.

Aisha Hollans led USC with 21 points on eight-of-18 shooting, but was only three for 10 from three-point range.

Ebony Hoffman had 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Trojans and teammates Jessica Cheeks (12) and Tiffany Elmore (11) also finished in double figures.
