Revisiting the Charm of Paracho

I lived for several years in Zacatecas, Mexico, and so I thoroughly enjoyed Christopher Reynolds’ article on Paracho, Michoacan, Mexico’s guitar center (“Guitar Central,” Special Travel Issue, Oct. 14). I happened upon the festival by accident in 1998. Reynolds helped me relive memories of a superb weekend of friendliness and revelry. The city of Morelia is a true colonial jewel. But Reynolds only mentioned the Hotel & Suites Villa San Jose. There are excellent hotels located in the city center, including Hotel Casino, Hotel Virrey de Mendoza and Hotel Posada de la Soledad.

I was intrigued when I saw the name Amezcua, as I have owned, played and loved my Amezcua guitar since a dear friend gave it to me 30 years ago. I had always heard that the best Mexican classical- and flamenco-style guitars came from Paracho, and that Amezcuas were made there. Thanks for a refreshing article on Paracho and the great craftsmen who work there.
