Georgia Upsets Hoyas

Ezra Williams scored 20 points and Georgia overcame the height advantage of No. 16 Georgetown for a 73-59 victory Monday night in the Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Classic at Springfield, Mass.

The Hoyas (1-1) started last season with 16 consecutive victories and reached the round of 16 in the NCAA tournament. Georgia (2-0) won only 16 games last season and was eliminated in the first round.

Jarvis Hayes, a transfer from Western Carolina who was recruited by Georgetown, scored 19 points for the Bulldogs. Williams and Steven Thomas each had 11 rebounds.

The Hoyas were led by Mike Sweetney with 18 points and Kevin Braswell with 15.

No. 2 Illinois 93, Eastern Illinois 53--Frank Williams scored 20 points and the Fighting Illini (2-0) held Eastern Illinois (1-1) to 27% shooting in a first-round game of the Las Vegas Classic.

Illinois will play Pennsylvania in the second round Thursday at Valley High in Las Vegas.

Henry Domercant, who averaged 22.8 points last season, scored 12 points on three-for-14 shooting for Eastern Illinois.

No. 15 Oklahoma State 83, Providence 65--Maurice Baker scored 20 points for the Cowboys (3-0) in the second round of the Las Vegas Classic.

Frederik Jonzen and Victor Williams each scored 17 points for Oklahoma State. Providence dropped to 1-1.

IN OTHER GAMES

Senior forward Tayo Akinsete scored a career-high 17 points in 17 minutes to lead San Francisco (1-1) to a 70-43 rout of Cal State Fullerton at Titan Gym. Akinsete, a reserve, made four of eight shots from three-point range and five of nine from the field. Pape Sow, a 6-foot-10 sophomore from Senegal, led the Titans (0-2) with nine points and seven rebounds in his Division I debut....Caron Butler scored 23 points and had six steals to lead Connecticut to an 84-71 victory over Vanderbilt (1-1) in the Huskies’ opener at Hartford, Conn.... Ugonna Onyekwe scored 30 points at Atlanta and Pennsylvania (1-0) made nine three-pointers in the second half to defeat for a 79-74 victory over Georgia Tech (1-1) in the first round of the Las Vegas Classic.
