Roy Gets Fourth Shutout in 10 Days
Patrick Roy posted his 57th career shutout and fourth in the last 10 days, and the Colorado Avalanche beat the Edmonton Oilers, 2-0, on Saturday night.
On a night when the Avalanche retired Ray Bourque’s No. 77 sweater, Colorado got a first-period goal from Chris Drury and an empty-netter from Shjon Podein in the final minute.
Roy needed to make only 11 saves for his NHL-leading fifth shutout of the season.
He extended his home shutout streak to 238 minutes, 47 seconds.
Drury scored from the right circle after rookie Radim Vrbata’s long shot rebounded off Oiler goalie Tommy Salo into the slot. Drury raced to the puck, delayed a shot as Salo went sprawling and tucked it past the goalie at 11:45.
The Oilers killed off penalties for the first 3:51 of the second period, which was scoreless despite Colorado’s 9-2 edge in shots.
Roy’s best save came early in the third period when he stopped a point-blank shot by Josh Green. He later had a glove save off Shawn Horcoff.
Before the game, Colorado retired a jersey for the first time, hoisting Bourque’s sweater. Bourque played only 15 months in Colorado but helped the Avalanche win a Stanley Cup last June before retiring.
