Dario Gutierrez Jr. held his tiny clenched fist to his pink face Wednesday as he slept in his mother’s arms at a Lynwood hospital.

The tranquil scene contrasted sharply with events 24 hours before, when the 8-day-old child stopped breathing and his parents watched in horror as he turned purple.

It took the combined efforts of a Sheriff’s Department sergeant and county paramedics to save the infant’s life.

“I was so nervous and scared that I wasn’t going to see my baby,” said the boy’s mother, Yesika Gutierrez.

Dario Gutierrez Sr., 25, and Yesika, 22, were enjoying some vacation atime with their newborn son Tuesday when they noticed that the infant was not breathing.

Gutierrez called 911, and a dispatcher gave him instructions on CPR. He said he was having trouble doing the procedure when Sgt. Ruben Martinez and Deputy Thomas Orellano arrived at the Cudahy home of Yesika’s mother.

Martinez administered CPR for about 40 seconds, and the baby coughed and regained his breath. Seconds later, Martinez said, the baby stopped breathing again and he once again administered CPR.

Dario Jr. was still blue and had very shallow breath when two paramedics, Chris Deamos and Todd Hood, took over and rushed him to the hospital.
