Judge Upholds Creation of Sequoia Monument
A judge rejected a lawsuit to dismantle the Giant Sequoia National Monument in Tulare County.
U.S. District Judge Ricardo M. Urbina ruled that former President Bill Clinton acted within his powers in April 2000 when he set aside 328,000 central Sierra acres containing 34 of the world’s 70 remaining sequoia groves.
Tulare County, which faced revenue losses because the monument cut logging in the region, sued along with timber firms and off-road enthusiasts.
But the judge sided with Earthjustice, the Natural Resources Defense Council and others.
