From Times Staff Reports

Los Angeles police Friday asked for public help in identifying the person who left a dead infant, burned beyond recognition, in the 3700 block of Union Pacific Avenue in Boyle Heights.

A merchant found the baby near an alley late Thursday afternoon and summoned police.

Officer Victoria Diaz said the case has been assigned to the LAPD’s Abused Child Unit and asked that anyone with information on the death call (213) 485-4220.

“The preliminary investigation revealed that the body of a baby had been abandoned and set on fire,” Diaz said.
