Seminar to Focus on Legacy of Dead Sea Scrolls
Hope Lutheran Church will hold its third annual Dead Sea Scrolls seminar from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday with biblical scholars Robert Eisenman and Eugene C. Ulrich.
Eisenman is a professor of Middle Eastern religions and archeology as well as acting director of the Institute for the Study of Judeo-Christian origins at Cal State Long Beach. Ulrich is vice chairman of the Dead Sea Scrolls Foundation board of directors.
Sunday’s program is “How the Dead Sea Scrolls Influenced Christianity and Judaism.” It will be held at 6720 Melrose Ave., Hollywood. A “snack lunch” will be provided. Admission is $50 per person. A group rate of $35 per person is available. (323) 938-9135.

Friends of Music at First Presbyterian Church of Santa Monica will present Les Archets de Paris at 2 p.m. Sunday at 1220 2nd St., Santa Monica. Charles R. Schwab, founder and chairman of Charles Schwab & Co., has honored Father Virgil Cordano, a Franciscan friar and pastor of the Santa Barbara Mission, by pledging $1 million to the Catholic studies department at UC Santa Barbara. Cordano was instrumental in shaping community sentiment that encouraged the establishment of a department of religious studies at the university more than 40 years ago.
* The San Francisco Theological Seminary Board of Trustees has chosen Philip Walker Butin to be the institution’s 10th president. Butin previously served as pastor of Shepherd of the Valley Presbyterian Church in Albuquerque. The seminary has two campuses, one in Northern California and one in Claremont. It is one of 11 graduate professional schools affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA).
