The roof on Seattle’s Safeco Field has been fixed in time for today’s Game 1.
Engineers at Safeco Field were scrambling to fix a glitch with the ballpark’s retractable roof, which opened about halfway before Sunday’s game against the Texas Rangers, then started malfunctioning. The problem was fixed by Monday afternoon, and the roof was fully operational, Mariner spokeswoman Rebecca Hale said.

The Philadelphia Phillies fired hitting coach Richie Hebner while keeping five other coaches for the 2002 season. Greg Gross, Manager Larry Bowa’s bench coach, replaces Hebner. The team will hire a new bench coach. The Phillies tied for ninth in the National League in team batting average.
