TIMES STAFF WRITER

One of the earliest examples of Greene & Greene architecture in Pasadena, the Hollister House was built in 1899.

It was restored by its owner, Tina Hagen, who recently relaunched her clothing line, Tina Hagen Designs.

About this house: Charles and Henry Greene opened their Pasadena office in 1894. By 1899, they were building homes reflecting prevailing tastes.

Using shingles and a style termed “straightforward, simpler and cleaner,” the Greenes were leaning toward the Craftsman style when they built the Hollister House.

It wasn’t until Charles Greene took a trip to England in 1901, however, that the brothers were exposed to the Arts and Crafts milieu.

Their distinctive style, known as the California Bungalow, did not thrive until 1907.
