UCLA 7, California 3

THE SCORING: * California: Mark Jensen 39-yard field goal at 12:49. Eight plays, 58 yards. * UCLA: Craig Bragg 42-yard run at 3:17. Three plays, 55 yards. PAT--Chris Griffith (kick).

TURNING POINT: Bragg’s touchdown was a perfectly executed double reverse that took away the Bears’ early momentum. Cory Paus handed the ball to DeShaun Foster, who gave it to Tab Perry, who handed it to Bragg, who raced down the right sideline.

NOT IN THE SUMMARY: Defensive lineman Daniel Nwangwu introduced himself to Paus on UCLA’s opening series, recording consecutive sacks.

STAT WATCH: UCLA was called for four penalties for 35 yards. A personal foul aided Cal’s first scoring drive and an offside on a fourth-down punt kept another Cal drive alive.

SECOND QUARTER

UCLA 21, California 10

TURNING POINT: Nwangwu was in the process of pulling down Paus for his fourth sack of the half, but Paus got off a pass that somehow got to Foster, who turned it into a 34-yard touchdown reception. It was Paus’ eighth consecutive completion and sent the Bruins into the locker room with a 21-10 lead.

NOT IN THE SUMMARY: UCLA receivers were open, and Paus took advantage. On the last scoring drive, he was four of four for 61 yards. He finished the half eight of nine for 134 yards.

STAT WATCH: UCLA’s defense came in giving up 94.4 yards per game rushing, but Joe Igber rushed for 74 yards in 12 carries. Paus was sacked four times. Ryan Smith, starting in place of the injured Brian Poli-Dixon, caught two passes for 32 yards.

THIRD QUARTER

UCLA 42, California 10

THE TURNING POINT: Tight end Mike Seidman, who came in with only three receptions in five games, caught a 40-yard pass from Paus on the opening possession of the second half, moving the ball to the Bears’ 27-yard line. On the next play, Paus connected with Smith for the touchdown, his 10th consecutive completion.

NOT IN THE SUMMARY: For the second consecutive game, Marcus Reese blocked a punt that led to a touchdown. He burst through to block Tyler Fredrickson’s punt, and Devon Reese picked up the ball on the Cal 16 and ran it in for a touchdown.

STAT WATCH: Paus was removed from the game with just over two minutes left, having completed 13 of 16 passes for 273 yards and three touchdowns. Cal was limited to one first down in four third-quarter possessions.

FOURTH QUARTER

UCLA 56, California 17

THE TURNING POINT: With backup quarterback Scott McEwan running the offense, UCLA let Foster pad his statistics during a 75-yard drive. Foster had runs of 10 and 26 yards and caught a 27-yard screen pass from McEwan before finally scoring on the first play of the fourth quarter.

NOT IN THE SUMMARY: Defensive lineman Kenyon Coleman was a consistent, intimidating presence for UCLA. He finished with four tackles and helped render Igber ineffective running the ball in the second half.

STAT WATCH: Foster rushed for 117 yards in 24 carries, the fifth time in six games he has exceeded the 100-yard mark.
