Miami gets at least another week to enjoy the No. 1 ranking in the Associated Press poll.

The Hurricanes (5-0), idle on a weekend in which two top-10 teams lost for the first time, easily held the top spot Sunday and UCLA (6-0) remained at No. 4.

While Fresno State and Oregon tumbled out of the top 10, Miami maintained its lead over No. 2 Oklahoma (7-0) and No. 3 Nebraska (8-0).

Miami received 47 first-place votes and 1,771 points from the 72 sports writers and broadcasters on the panel.

Oklahoma, which visits Nebraska on Saturday, had 22 first-place votes and 1,741 points.

Nebraska had two first-place votes and 1,626 points. UCLA had the remaining first-place vote and 1,602 points.

In the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll, the top five are Miami, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Virginia Tech and UCLA.

Oregon (6-1) dropped five spots to No. 11 in the AP poll and Fresno State (6-1) dropped from No. 8 to No. 18.

Virginia Tech (6-0) moved to No. 5, followed by No. 6 Florida, No. 7 Texas, No. 8 Michigan, No. 9 Tennessee and No. 10 Maryland (7-0).

Oregon was followed by No. 12 South Carolina, No. 13 Washington, No. 14 Washington State (7-0), No. 15 Georgia, No. 16 Brigham Young (7-0) and No. 17 Auburn.

Florida State is No. 19, followed by No. 20 Stanford, No. 21 Georgia Tech, No. 22 Illinois, No. 23 North Carolina, No. 24 Purdue, and No. 25 Colorado.

Stanford returned to the Top 25 for the first time since mid-1997 and North Carolina is in for the first time since the 1998 preseason poll.

The first Bowl Championship Series standings will be released today.

Arizona end Johnny Jackson was released from a Seattle hospital, which said he was uninjured.

Jackson was carried off the field during Arizona’s 31-28 loss to Washington on Saturday.

Initial reports said he had hurt his neck.

Michigan State backup quarterback Ryan Van Dyke will be out for three weeks after fracturing his jaw against Minnesota on Saturday.

Van Dyke, who ranks third in the Big Ten in passing efficiency (143.3 rating), had his jaw set and wired shut Sunday.

Rutgers linebacker Brad Cunningham, carried off the field against Navy on Saturday, has no major injury to his neck, Coach Greg Schiano said.
