Man Arrested in Beating Death of Ex-Girlfriend
A 20-year-old man allegedly beat his ex-girlfriend to death with a rock as she walked to work, police said Sunday.
Neighbors called police when they heard arguing. Officers and paramedics found 30-year-old Maria Rubio, the mother of one, dead in between houses.
“It happened too fast for anyone to do anything,” said police Sgt. Mike Aspland.
Witnesses said the man tried to drag Rubio away before beating her. He then ran but was caught by police two blocks away, Aspland said.
Officers arrested Lucas Campos Evangelista in connection with the killing. He is being held at the Santa Barbara County Jail without bail for investigation of kidnapping and murder, Aspland said.
