A San Jose engineer seeking to hike America’s three premier trails in one year may accomplish his goal by week’s end.

Brian Robinson began his attempt to hike the Appalachian Trail, the Continental Divide Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail on Jan. 1.

To finish the Appalachian Trail--the last of the trio he has to walk--Robinson must still hike Maine’s Mt. Katahdin. Barring bad weather, he hopes to trek the 118 miles left of the trail in six days, according to his Web site.

Robinson, 40, has already completed the Pacific Crest Trail and the Continental Divide Trail. He is returning to the 2,168-mile Appalachian Trail after heavy snow forced him off the route in April.
