5 Dead, 20 Hurt in Brick Facade Collapse
Five construction workers were killed and 10 others were injured when bricks from a Gramercy Park building they were working on collapsed and crumbled a 14-story scaffold.
Eight firefighters and two police officers who responded to the incident were also injured. Six of the firefighters were taken to area hospitals. Their conditions were not immediately known.
More than 200 paramedics, police officers and firefighters, some pulled from the World Trade Center wreckage, furiously sifted through the rubble to reach the trapped workers.
When the plume cleared, all that was left was a three-story pile of steel and wood. The cause of the collapse was not immediately clear.
